About Me

Bern, Kansas, United States
I have been teaching for 19 years. My husband and I have two daughters, and live north of Bern, KS.I currently teach 7-9 English,7-8 Reading, and Journalism at Pawnee City. Computers make me a bit apprehensive. I do use them at school, but mainly as research tools and word processors. This year however, I have started to add power points and have gotten rid of my "overhead". Ialso started my students journaling on ANGEL, and am getting more proficient with my mimio board. My home computer is a PC, but at school we use MACS. This can get confusing, but luckily, my girls are "PC's" and can usually talk me through any major errors at home. Getting my Master's is something I have always wanted to accomplished. The on-line cohort program was too good to pass up, and after a collegue of mine said she'd do it if I did...well, here I am! In addition to the higher salary, having a Masters will allow me to teach early entry college courses at my school. This is exciting for me, because even though I LOVE junior high, after nineteen years I am ready for something a little more interesting to teach than "young adolescent fiction."

Favorite Assignment

My favorite assignment so far during this course has also been the most stressful. This was the imovie. The frustrating part was figuring out how to work between the world of MACS and PC's. The cameras, ipods and camcorders I used were the schools and they are all formatted for MACS. at home I have a PC. I had a hard time getting things to convert and spent an hour or more talking to technical support at dell only to find out, I couldn't switch files from quick time to a PC format - an expensive learning experience as it cost me $60.00. After finding this out, I then had to rely on a colleague to help me at school and even then ended up just borrowing a school's laptop to create my movie using a MACS movie maker instead of my imovie. However, once I got all the files onto one computer and in a compatible format the assignment was fun. I spent almost a whole day playing and testing my movie before I submitted, but it was such a great learning experience. Even though I am still very new at the process, I am going to introduce this process to my eighth graders today and together we are going to create book videos. Since I learn best by teaching something, I am looking forward to this process. IT will be stressful and I will probably have a few more wrinkles by Saturday, I am confident that my students and I can do this! I guess I'll find out by Friday. Wish me luck!
